Recipe – Homemade Nutella

Recipe – Homemade Nutella – I came across a recipe in an Italian cooking magazine for homemade Nutella. I was so excited about making the candy bar in a jar on my own!

The recipe is very easy and super yummy. It does not have the exact candy bar flavor of Nutella, it does however, have a very fresh hazelnut flavor that is sure to please any Nutella fan in your house!

INGREDIENTS

1/2 cup peeled hazelnuts

3/4 cup powdered sugar

2 tablespoons cacao

1 teaspoon vanilla

salt (dash or to taste)

1/4 cup sunflower oil

1/2 cup milk

5 ounces milk chocolate

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Arrange hazelnuts on a baking sheet and toast for 10 minutes.

3. Using a food processor, grind the hazelnuts until they form almost a paste. Add sugar and cacao and pulse until mixture is crumbly. Add oil, vanilla and salt and pulse until mixture becomes smooth.

4. In a sauce pan, heat milk over medium-high heat, just to a light boil. While milk is heating, chop chocolate into small and even pieces. Put chocolate into a  bowl. Pour hot milk over chocolate. Stir the mixture very gently, until smooth making sure not to overwork. Chocolate is super delicate!

5. Add milk/chocolate mixture to the nut mixture and pulse until the cream is smooth and uniform.

6. Pour chocolate spread into a resealable container. It will yield about a 1 ¼ cups and can be stored at room temperature for about 10 days (if it lasts that long!)

  1. Sounds great Diana – never thought about making my own Nutella!! My son thinks Nutella should be a staple in his diet, this would go down well for sure.

    • HI Joy!!! I think Nutella should be a staple in my diet too! The recipe is good…. but I admit, I still prefer the store bought…..

    • Thanks Lauren…..I was pretty pleased…I had to play around with the recipe a bit…but it came out quite nice!

    • Hi Graham….well…I have to admit those guys over at Ferrero really know their stuff and nothing can compare…but this came out pretty good. 🙂

  2. Super. I must try it. I have not bought any as I am not happy with the ingredients but this one gives me control of what goes in to it.

    • EXACTLY! That is why I tried it too. I admit, I kind of like Ferrero’s version better…still…this was surprisingly good!

      • I have never tried Ferrero’s so my thoughts can only be positive. Cannot wait to try it this weekend

  3. Wow-you just blew my diet! I’ll have to try this. Nutella on birthday cakes sounds so much better than icing! Did you know that the Nutella that is exported to North America isn’t exactly the same as the one you buy in Italy? If you compare the ingredients, they are not exactly the same and neither is the taste. When I was in grade 1, I used to get teased by the ‘Anglo Canadian’ kids for bringing a ‘chocolate sandwich’ for lunch. They thought that was weird, but poor things, I felt sorry for them because they didn’t know what they were missing! (Just thought I’d add a detail from my ‘traumatic’ childhood). Ciao, Cristina

    • ha, ha, ha…..LOVE your childhood story! And I didn’t know it was different in North America….I guess kind of like Coke? It always tastes better in Mexico. And yes…the Nutella on the cake! So crazy delicious….usually I mix in a ganache…..it tones down the hazelnut flavor a little…

    • Hi Katie! I got the hazelnuts that are already peeled, however, if you can’t find those, yes, just rub off the skins after roasting….great question!

  4. I pigged out on Nutella once and ever since then it makes me gag. My bad….i’m filing this recipe because I’m determined to regain my love. Homemade is always best:)

    • Hi Susan….so funny….I can see something like that happening to me too. This recipe is nice because it does not have that candy bar feel that nutella has. You might want to give it a shot and slowly ease your way back to the real stuff. 🙂

  5. I love this! Natalie is making this soon-she always talks about the little Hungry Hippos that we first got w/you–they have a bit of nutella like filling! I just passed my pantry and saw some fresh croissants I just bought and the jar of nutella above them-sounds like a good combo!

    • ohhhhhh….hungry hippos! Those things are so dangerous…can’t have them in the house……and yes…..croissants and nutella! HEAVEN…..hope y’all are doing well!

    • Hi Alida! Yes…I have to say, it was super yummy……however the taste did not resemble that of Ferrero…still…it was good!

    • Hi Diana! For sure buying it costs less. And personally I like the store bought better as well. This recipe is great and you can really taste the fresh nuts…so it feels more real. But when I am looking for something naughty to eat, I don’t always want real! Ha, ha, ha…..I am the gal that could eat 4 shipley donuts in one sitting – no prob. Truly, it just depends on my mood. I love the idea of being able to make ANYTHING on my own. I like to make bread and gnocchi and time consuming stuff. My sis always says, “but you live in Italy where you can walk down the street to the panetierre and buy fantastic fresh bread…why would you make it on your own???” But I am kind of like that….I like the idea of creating. Ya know? Anyway…if you make it, let me know what you think. Have a great day!!!! Baci!
